The Betty Ford Center is a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center in Rancho Mirage, California co-founded by former United States First Lady Betty Ford and her friend, Ambassador Leonard Firestone, in nineteen eighty-two. Mrs. Ford's decision to undertake such a project fell on the heels of her own battle with chemical addiction, and after her release from the U.S. Naval Hospital, she pursued the goal of creating a treatment center that emphasized the needs of women. The non profit Betty Ford Center reserves fifty percent of its space for women, and the programs are gender specific.

Founded in nineteen fifty-seven by Reading, Pennsylvania industrialist and recovering alcoholic, Richard J. Caron is one of the first drug and alcohol treatment centers in the world, and the first in the U.S. to establish a residential co-dependency treatment program.

His vision became a reality and Crossroads opened its doors to the world in nineteen ninety-eight. Since then it has quickly developed into an internationally recognized treatment centre of excellence, providing services to individuals and their families suffering from the devastating effects of addiction.
